01What brings people here

You don’t have to arrive with it named.

Whether you’re facing a specific challenge, feeling stuck, or wanting to understand yourself more deeply, counselling can offer the support you need.

This is not an exhaustive list. If yours isn’t here, ask me.

  • Anxiety and depression

Worry, dread, or a flatness that will not lift.

  • Low mood

Days that feel heavier than they used to.

  • Relationship issues

The same argument, or a silence that has settled in.

  • Addiction

Drink, drugs, or a habit that has become hard to hold.

  • Bereavement and loss

Grief, and the shape it leaves behind.

  • Meaning and purpose

A sense that something has gone quiet.

  • Life transitions

Parenthood, a career change, a loss that rearranges things.

I work with individuals and with couples. How I work explains the difference.

02The between

The work happens between two people.

I am a relational, depth-oriented counsellor, trained in humanistic and integrative approaches. The relationship between us is not a warm-up for the work. It is the work.

I will offer empathy, authenticity and acceptance — the core conditions that let a trusting relationship develop. Alongside them I bring humour, and a little challenge when it helps.

  • Empathy
  • Authenticity
  • Acceptance
The gap is the work.It narrows, and widens, and never closes.

I offer a warm, open and honest connection, and invite the whole of you to take part in this process, at a pace that suits you.

03How I work

On your own, or the two of you.

The first appointment is a chance for us both to see whether we can work together. After that we meet weekly, and we work at a pace that suits you.

Individual counselling

Relational, depth-oriented, at your pace.

I draw on a range of therapeutic ideas, tailored to you, with the therapeutic relationship at the heart of it. We’ll work together to explore, pay attention, and process what’s happening for you.

Many of the patterns that bring people to counselling have roots in the past. We can discover and process those old ways of being, and make room for a more accepting sense of self.

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Relationship and family issues
  • Self-esteem and self-compassion
  • Drug and alcohol issues

Couples counselling

The same care, with a more directive hand.

Relationships take work. Without positive attention, couples can drift apart or fall into destructive patterns. My focus is to help you find effective ways to communicate, connect and repair.

We look at relational patterns from childhood or from previous relationships. Unlike individual work, I will sometimes take a hands-on, directive approach.

  • Communication and connection
  • Conflict, and trust after hurt
  • Patterns that keep you stuck
  • Life transitions, together

This is deep work, and it needs a little time. I suggest a minimum of twelve weeks, after which it is yours to decide when it is right to end.

08Questions

A few things people ask.

If your question isn’t here, write to therapy@kellypaterson.co.uk and I’ll answer it.

How long is a session?

I will confirm the length of a session when we arrange your first appointment. That first meeting is a full session, and it is a chance for us both to see whether we can work together.

How often would we meet?

Weekly. It is important to keep momentum, so I don’t often recommend less than weekly meetings. I suggest a minimum of twelve weeks, after which it is yours to decide when it is right to end — with at least a week’s notice.

Individual, or couples?

Both. I work with individuals and with couples. Individual work is relational and depth-oriented, at your pace. Couples work holds the same qualities and adds a more directive approach where it is needed.

Online, or in person?

Either. I see people in rooms in Cotham, just off Whiteladies Road, and online by secure video call or Teams. For online work you need a quiet, private space, a stable connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.

What about confidentiality?

My counselling agreement sets out confidentiality and the cancellation policy in detail. I will send it to you before we begin, and we can talk through any of it first.

Are there concessionary places?

Yes — a limited number. Do ask if cost is a barrier, and we will talk about what is possible.
